Once you book your long distance medical transportation ride through Stellar Transportation all that’s left to do is prepare for your trip. We’ve got you covered with this list of the most important things you don’t want to forget for long distance medical transportation.
Depending on where you are going and what for, the things you need vary, but these guidelines will help ensure you are prepared no matter what.
The last thing you want to do is forget something important when are traveling 150+ miles away from home. So, the first thing you need to do is make a list of everything you need to bring along with you. Start early, perhaps even a week before you are scheduled to leave, and add to the list as you think of new things. Then you can check everything off once you’re walking out the door.
Things to include on your checklist for long distance travel:
Change of clothing: Depending on how long you will be gone for, don’t forget to bring the right amount of clothing. You may also want to bring a sweater or a warmer outfit to change into if you will still be out and about after dark.
Walking aid: If you use a walker, cane or any other walking aid to get around, bring it with you for long distance transportation. Along the way you will need to get out, maybe to use the restroom or just to go into your appointment, during which time you will need your walking aid. Don’t forget any other aids you need either, like eyeglasses or hearing aids.
Personal identification: Even though you won’t be driving it’s important to remember your ID. You may be asked for it if you are going to an appointment, or for any number of reasons.
Cell phone: If you have a cell phone it’s always a good idea to bring it with you when traveling far from home.
Proper records: Bring all records that you may need for the appointment you are traveling to. You don’t want to get all the way there and lack everything you need to make the most of your visit.
Book: Bring something to help pass the time. Our drivers will do their best to keep you entertained, but on long road trips our patients often enjoy just sitting back with a good book and enjoying the ride. For more tech-savvy patients, bring along your iPad or Kindle. Magazines, word puzzles and newspapers are other great options to bring along to help pass the time.
Things to include on your checklist for long distance medical transportation trips:
All medical records: If you are seeing a new doctor it’s important that you bring along all of your most recent medical records so they have an updated picture of your health. Coming with all of your records could prevent having to undergo the same test twice.
A list of all medications you are taking: Bring along a list of the medications you are currently taking, as well as how much you are prescribed and how often. You can create a card on MedIDs.com.
Any changes to medical records: If you have recently received new test results that are more current than what your medical history card reads, you need to bring this information with you. Even small changes in your records could alter the course of treatment best suited to you.
Cane, walker, or any walking aid: We mentioned this above as well, although it serves a unique priority when going to a medical appointment. For one, it is helpful for your doctor to know about and see you use your walking aid so they know how to provide the best care to you. They may also need to make adjustments to the walking aid to help you be more comfortable and safe. Bringing along your walking aid is especially important if you are going to a physical therapy appointment. No need to worry, all walking aids fit comfortably in our spacious vans.
Recording device of some kind: If you are traveling far you want to remember every word you gather at your destination. Bring along a recording device of some sort to help you remember everything at a later date. This is especially helpful for doctor’s appointments. Loved ones often ask you what happened at the appointment, and this gives you the perfect way to relay the information. It’s also a good way for you to go back and listen for a piece of information you may forget after you return home, like how many pills to take and for how many days.
